Project

Secondary school No. 21 in Chernihiv

This project was part of a large-scale infrastructure restoration after the destruction of buildings due to Russian aggression. School No. 21 is a newly built modern educational institution, designed with the principles of sustainability, accessibility, and multifunctionality in mind.

Architectural idea

The school building is designed in a restrained modern style, with a clear compositional structure and a high level of transparency. The white facade with hinged metal elements for sun protection contrasts with warm wooden accents. Panoramic glazing of the hall, open galleries and stairs in the atrium emphasize the openness and accessibility of the space. The composition of the facades is diversified by vertical blinds and decorative panels.

Functional structure

The school is designed for over 1,000 students and has a clear zonal organization:

  • The first floor is the core of school life: a lobby, a cloakroom for 600 students, a large hall, a cafeteria with a full production cycle, a medical unit (therapist, isolation ward), a lecture hall, and elementary school classrooms. There are also playrooms that operate outside of school hours.
  • The second floor is an area of general education classes, resource and methodical rooms, a library, and a sports block with a large hall, a choreographic hall, and locker rooms.
  • The third floor is the space for specialized classes: chemistry, physics, computer science, robotics, and an assembly hall. Special attention was paid to the amphitheater-like organization of the interior space, which is used for school-wide events.
  • The basement level (-3,900) is a shelter with a large number of rooms for the safe stay of children: classrooms, areas for primary school, bathrooms, ventilation units, a cafeteria, storage of food, water and waste. The shelter fully complies with current civil protection standards.

Technical features and landscaping

  • Total area of the school: over 5700 m², volume – over 70,000 m³School plans (4).
  • Facade materials: mineral wool insulation, ventilated stone decoration, decorative concrete.
  • The territory is landscaped, several playgrounds are provided: sports (football, basketball), play areas, recreation areas, parking and utility buildings.

The School No. 21 project is an example of a modern school space that takes into account not only educational needs, but also safety, inclusivity, flexibility, and emotional comfort. It is not just a new building — it is an educational hub for forming new communities and rebuilding lives after tragedy.
